Xtrema Ceramic Cookware *Review*

Is your cookware leaching poisons into the food you cook? Check out our review of this healthy cookware by Ceramcor. It’s non-toxic, non-leaching, naturally non-stick, and a dream to cook with…

There’s a new cookware in-town… Xtrema™ Ceramic Cookware by Ceramcor. It’s a healthy alternative to stainless-steel and non-stick cookware. I became interested in it when it was recommended by Dr. Mercola as a non-leaching cookware.

A lot of us have heard about the non-stick coated pans and that they are harmful to our health, as they leach chemicals into our foods. If the fumes can kill birds, what might they be doing to us as we inhale them? This is why I got rid of my non-stick pans over a year ago. I wanted a healthier option for me and my family.

I purchased some stainless-steel pans, having heard that they are healthier to cook with.  Later I found that they may not be so healthy. Metal cookware, even stainless-steel can leach metals into our foods. For more information on this, see the Xtrema™ Product Testing Page which explains the leaching of stainless-steel and how it is made (non-green).

My Review of Xtrema™ Ceramic Cookware

Xtrema Ceramic Cookware

I was very excited when I received the opportunity to try this new cookware by Ceramcor. I really love to cook, as you all probably already know :). So, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the Xtrema™ Ceramic Cookware. I do have to note that I was impressed by the packing of the cookware. Since it is ceramic I was concerned if it could be cracked or broken when I got it, but that was not the case. Ceramcor sent me their 10” Skillet Braiser and 1.25 Qt Steamer Set to test.

I want this review to be easy for everyone to read. See the breakout below of what I cooked in the Xtrema™ cookware and my grading for how it cooked that particular dish. Followed by care and cleaning of the ceramic cookware, my summary of the cookware, and how to purchase some of this cookware for yourself.

What I Cooked in the Xtrema™ Cookware

spacer

Fajita Stew A

I used the 10″ skillet braiser (which includes a lid) to make a batch of my Fajita Stew.

  • Meat cooked up beautifully and evenly.
  • No sticking, used just a little coconut oil.
  • Meat was softer/juicer, not dried out like it can get in other pans.
  • Easy clean-up.
  • Overall the stew was better that ever.

Overall the Fajita Stew turned out well. Pans take longer to heat up, but keep their heat well. Have to be careful not to get them too hot. The non-stick ability is fairly good as long as you keep a low to medium heat and use a small amount of oil. A bonus is that it kept the stew hot while we were eating, so if anyone wanted seconds they were still hot.

Texas Skillet Bread A-

I used the 1.25 QT pan to make a batch of my Texas Skillet Bread because the small size was perfect.

  • First pancake (skillet bread) came out very well.
  • Not much sticking, used just a little coating of coconut oil.
  • Taste was good.
  • Easy clean-up.
  • Overall pleased with the results.

First pancake of Texas Skillet Bread went well, second one stuck a little. I believe it was my fault as I didn’t re-coat the pan with oil and I let the pan get a little too hot. But all in all I was pleased. What can I say, it was way better than my stainless-steel pan.

Scrambled Eggs B+

I used the 10″ skillet braiser to make some scrambled eggs. We haven’t had eggs lately, as my stainless-steel cookware sticks horribly.

  • Eggs cooked well with a little coconut oil and a small pat of butter, for flavor.
  • Stuck a little, but not as much as with my stainless pans.
  • Eggs were not dried out, the taste was very good.
  • Easy clean-up.
  • Overall pleased with the results.

Cooked scrambled eggs using a little coconut oil and a small pat of butter, for flavor. Kept heat at medium to low, eggs stuck a little but not half as much as with my stainless steel pans. Any stuck on food comes off easy with a light soaking in soapy water and a little Dobie Pad. Not much elbow grease needed at all. Kids really enjoyed the eggs. I felt good knowing that there were no metals leached into the food I was feeding my family.

Salmon Fillets A

I used the 10″ skillet braiser to cook up a couple of salmon fillets to serve over some spring-green salad mix. Normally with my other cookware the salmon would end up sticking to some degree.

  • Salmon fillets cooked evenly, all-the-way-through and tasted wonderful.
  • No sticking at all with just a light coating of coconut oil.
  • Fillets stayed moist, did not dry out as they tend to do with my other cookware.
  • Very easy clean-up.
  • Overall pleased with the results.

Salmon fillets cooked great in the 10″ skillet. I let the pan warm up slightly, then gave it a light coating of coconut oil. Again, keeping a medium to low heat I seasoned and cooked the fillets, flipping them once. They cooked beautifully and evenly all-the-way-through, since the ceramic surface heats evenly, and they didn’t stick at all. They tasted pretty good too. Clean-up was a breeze.

Fried Eggs A-

I used the 10″ skillet braiser to fry up some eggs, something I really wanted to try since doing this in my stainless cookware was next to impossible. My family has really been wanting fried eggs, so I set out to give it a try in this new cookware.

  • Eggs cooked well with a generous coating of coconut oil.
  • Edges sometimes stuck a little, the key is to have a thin (non-metal) spatula to flip them with.
  • Eggs tasted great, and were really enjoyed by my family.
  • Easy clean-up.
  • Overall pleased with the results.

Fried eggs in 10″ skillet with a generous amount of coconut oil (it’s good for you). Kept heat at medium to low, edges of the eggs sometimes did stick a little…but nothing that a thin (non-metal) spatula couldn’t handle. My stainless cookware could not cook these eggs as well. Pan cleaned-up very easily. Eggs tasted great cooked in this pan.

Care, Use, & Cleaning

Xtrema™ states on their website:

“You cannot scratch the surface of Xtrema™ cookware…..You can use Soft Scrub, Bon Ami, Comet and Ajax powered cleaners along with steel wool SOS and Brillo pads and heavy duty scrub sponges…”

I have not had the need to use any of those harsh cleaning products with these pans. Just a light soaking in warm soapy water and a Dobie Pad has done the trick just fine for me (you can buy these at Wal-Mart or Target by-the-way)…you don’t even need to use a lot of elbow grease. I was very pleasantly surprised at how easy the Xtrema™ Ceramic Cookware cleaned up.

See the Xtrema™ website for more information on Cooking & Cleaning Xtrema™ Cookware.

In Summary

I am extremely pleased with this cookware and will be replacing my current stainless-steel pans as I can, until they are all phased out. The cookware is very affordable, especially when you think about how durable it is…It will last for years (a lifetime) if cared for properly. Please see the Xtrema™ Use & Care/Warrany Page for more information. I am glad to have this healthy cookware option for me and my family, and for all my readers out there, and their families.

I bought my Extrema Cookware a little over 3 years ago and I like how they wash up so easily.
The skillet is one of my favorites to use while frying and eggs are a breeze to cook in the Extrema skillet. Be careful, they will break because they are ceramic. I accidentally dropped my lid, it slipped out of my hand shortly after I bought it.
I have not replaced it, they are a little pricey but not as costly as some of the other pans like Le’Crueset that I have bought, I like them too. I bought them only when I could afford it, that took a few years!

  2. Linda Brown says

xtrema is naturally nonstick and independently varified to be non-toxic as the cookware doesn’t leach any chemical and lead free. Isn’t it a good enough reason to love this cookware? A truly well-written post, Shannon! Look forward to reading more posts as comprehensive and informative as this one.

  3. Hiya,

I like to cook with very high heat and no oil to brown food. Most pans end up sticking with high heat (green ceramic etc). I hoped that the high heat aspect would matter but you said it was sticking because you had the heat so high.

Seems like a car that will do 250mph on the roadway when the speed limit is 55.

    thanks though.

    • TC, Using high heat to brown or as some call it blacken meats is not a good practice no matter what pan you are using. There is research that shows when meat is cooked at a high heat and becomes browned or blackened the cellular structure of the meat changes promoting cancer. It seems that just letting the meat natural turn light brown under normal cooking conditions is much better. – Jeff

Where is it made? If you don’t tell me, I will presume it is Communist China which means it is poisonous

    • John, I looked on the bottom of the cookware and it says it is handcrafted in China. The manufacturer has informed me that they go to extra lengths to have it handcrafted using materials that are tested to be lead-free.

  5. Janet Cadigan says

Your review of the Extrema Ceramic cookware did not indicate what kind of stovetop was used. Does this cookware do equally well on gas, electric and Ceramic cooktops? I would like to know how this cookware would do on the Ceramic cooktops.

  6. Janet, thank you for pointing that out. That is something I totally overlooked.

I have an electric ceramic cooktop myself and that is what I tested the cookware on. The cookware did wonderfully on my ceramic cooktop, the bottom of the pans are really pretty smooth so there is no real concern of scratching the cooktop when moving the pan on the stove.

I do not have access to gas or conventional electric cooktops, so did not get to test the cookware using those methods. I am almost certain that it would work on those surfaces as well.

And with ALL cooking surfaces the only thing to keep in mind is that you should not need to use much over medium heat. The ceramic heats up fairly quickly so the preheating time needed is minimal.
