Is Coffee Good for Your Health?

Recent studies have indicating that drinking coffee reduces the risk for Diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Colon Cancer, and Heart Disease compared to that of non-drinkers.

“…the studies show that coffee is far more beneficial than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, researcher at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own research and tracks coffee studies around the globe. For most individuals, studies show that very little bad comes from drinking coffee, but a lot of good.

What is it in coffee that is beneficial? Caffeine, Anti-oxidants, Minerals? Studies have shown that all of these things are beneficial to ones health.

Though, coffee isn’t for everyone. It is acidic to the body and has been shown to increase digestion problems in some people. It can also cause insomnia, anxiety, and irregular heartbeat. Too much caffeine during pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of miscarriage. Heart patients and those at risk for osteoporosis are advised to limit or avoid coffee consumption.

And one should definitely avoid decaf coffee, as it has be treated with chemicals to remove the caffeine. Also decaf coffee is not truly without caffeine, it has at least 7 to 10 mg of caffeine per 6 ounce cup, and decaf coffee brewed at coffee bars can contain twice as much caffeine because they typically brew coffee stronger.

Coffee Alternatives

Soda is definitely NOT an alternative to coffee (see the video below). Thankfully there are other alternatives if you happen to be one who likes the taste of coffee but cannot tolerate it well (like me).

In comes Teeccino Herbal Coffee, which tastes like and brews like coffee but has absolutely NO caffeine. It is made from herbs, fruits, and nuts. Since Teeccino is non-acidic, you can brew it and save it for later. It will keep (brewed) in the refrigerator for a week with no loss in flavor (it will not get stale like regular coffee), which makes for quick & easy iced coffee drinks. Teeccino has ingredients in it that have been shown to improve digestion.

Teeccino offers a number of health benefits:
  • Naturally Caffeine-Free – no processing, no chemical residues
  • High in heart-healthy Potassium
  • Natural Energy Boost – from nutrients, not stimulants
  • Alkaline – helps reduce acidity and restore alkaline balance
  • Rich in Inulin, a soluble fiber in chicory root, that helps improve digestion and elimination plus increases the absorption of calcium and minerals

So if you can handle the caffeine in coffee, by all means drink it. But do so in moderation, as it is very acidic to the body. And only drink organic coffee, because non-organic coffee is highly sprayed with pesticides. The good news is that there is an alternative to coffee for those of us who like the taste of coffee, but avoid voluntarily or in-voluntarily (bodies cannot handle it).

Teeccino comes in many flavor options, just like real coffee (I prefer the Java). You can find it in some higher-level supermarkets, or in our Amazon Shop.

Comments

  1. Can cold brewing organic coffee change the down sides?

    • Krystal, coffee is coffee, however it is brewed. More importantly is how much one drinks. Moderation is key! A couple of coffees a week is a lot different than a couple a day. Ask yourself when do you drink it and why. Personally I used to drink a lot of coffee daily and all it did was give me a boost that my poor diet did not. When I changed my diet, I mean change from top to bottom, I saw energy come in by the loads. Now I just about never have coffee, water tastes so much better.

  2. How does the acid in kombucha compare to coffee in our body?

    • This can be a big subject, but let me just hit it quick. Coffee is a static acid (dead). Basically water is poured over cooked (dead) coffee beans and the essence of what is coffee (minerals, acids, nutrients, etc.) is leached out of the beans into a cup. Kombucha is a living drink, created from a balanced organism, it is a food so to speak. Like many acidic live foods they become alkaline in digestion, lemons are another example.:) – Jeff

  3. Kathleen says

What about Swiss water decaffeinated coffee? I know regular decaf was bad because of the chemicals, but was always told that drinking organic Swiss water decaf was good. Any comments on this?

    • Kathleen, From many reports Swiss water decaffeinated coffee is the best type of coffee to consume if you have to drink coffee. Keep in mind even decaffeinated coffee still does have caffeine in it, just less. Some coffee shops actually brew their’s stronger than normal so it can contain even more caffeine in the decaffeinated version, than you would make at home. Don’t forget all coffee does tend to push the body to a more acidic pH.
