Is That True?! (Some Interesting Food Facts)

Today let’s take a break and have some fun. Here are some neat food facts, some will make you laugh and others make you think. Take the time to relax and enjoy life.  It is interesting what some of the facts say about us as a people.

Here are the 15 food & Health facts of the day.

1. The only “real” food that U.S. Astronauts are allowed to take into space is pecan nuts.

2. McDonalds calls frequent buyers of their food heavy users.

3. Apples, not caffeine, are more efficient at waking you up in the morning.

4. Ketchup was sold in the 1830’s as medicine.

5. Chocolate contains the same chemical, phenyl ethylamine that your brain produces when you fall in love.

6. There are more nutrients in the cornflake package itself than there are in the actual cornflakes.

7. A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk in her lifetime.

8. Chocolate was used as medicine during the 18th century. It was believed that chocolate could cure a stomach ache.

9. There are more coffee drug addicts in the US than drug addicts of any other kind.

10. Americans, on average, eat 18 acres of pizza every single day.

11. The only continent that does not have a McDonald’s is Antarctica. A Big Mac contains 560 calories.

12. Iceberg lettuce is 90 percent water, and therefore, of negligible nutrient value.

13. There are 1,200 varieties of watermelon.

14. Diet soda has not been proven to aid in weight loss. In fact, it’s been shown to actually increase hunger.

15. Popcorn has been around for 6,000 years.

  1. Very interesting! You know what’s funny about #9 is those coffee addicts are JUST as defensive about their “habit” as drug addicts.

    • Thanks for the comment Kim, yes addictions can be very powerful. When I was in college I had to have my quart of coffee to make it through the morning. If I had known what I know now about food I could have avoided that. 🙂

  2. I guess the fact that was most surprising to me was #9. There are more coffee drug addicts in the US than drug addicts of any other kind. It makes sense when you think about it. Kinda sad at the same time.
